Exploring Neodymium Iron Boron: The Supreme 'Magnetic King' Among Permanent Magnets
2025-10-21
As the third-generation rare earth permanent magnetic material, neodymium iron boron is hailed as the "Magnetic King" due to its ultra-high magnetic performance. Its magnetic energy product can reach over 400 kJ/m³, and its magnetic force strength is more than ten times that of traditional ferrites. Moreover, it can achieve strong magnetic field output in an extremely small volume. After new energy vehicles adopt neodymium iron boron motors, their volume can be reduced by more than 30%. The cost of magnetic materials only accounts for 4.5% of the total vehicle cost. However, for a long time, the production of high-performance neodymium iron boron has required a large amount of scarce and expensive heavy rare earths, which not only drives up costs but also restricts production capacity.
The grain boundary diffusion technology developed by Cui Hongbing's team from the Magnetic Materials Institute of Baotou Research Institute of Rare Earths has achieved a breakthrough of "reducing rare earths and enhancing performance" Using ordinary N50 magnets as the base material, through surface coating and precise heat treatment processes, heavy rare earths can efficiently penetrate the grain boundaries of the magnets. While reducing the usage of heavy rare earths by 30% to 70%, the coercive force is increased by more than 1000 kilamperes per meter. More importantly, this technology has raised the service temperature of magnets from 80℃ to 180℃, meeting the high-temperature working conditions requirements of new energy vehicle drive motors, wind turbines, and other applications. "Previously, SH grade magnets relied on imported heavy rare earths. Now, they can be produced using domestic light rare earth substrates, reducing costs by 40%." " Cui Hongbing introduced.
Technological breakthroughs directly activate industrial momentum. Data shows that since October 2025, the total market value of the domestic rare earth permanent magnet sector has remained stable at over 1.38 trillion yuan, with a single-day trading volume of 47.7 billion yuan on October 20th. Several new energy vehicle manufacturers have signed supply agreements with rare earth enterprises in Baotou. It is expected that the penetration rate of high-performance neodymium iron boron in the new energy vehicle field will increase to 85% by 2026. Industry experts point out that this technology has broken the foreign monopoly on high-end magnetic materials and provided a guarantee for the localization of core components in China's new energy industry.
